“Each of us is a continuation of Christ’s incarnation. From contemplation we gradually emerge with a refined inward eye that perceives the mystery of Christ’s presence everywhere and in everything.” Thomas Keating, the Heart of the World

Centering Prayer is a method of prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God’s presence. This was traditionally called contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer is the opening of mind and heart – our whole being – to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words and emotions. Centering Prayer facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer – verbal, mental, or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God.

INTENSIVE: Enter into a more profound level of spiritual practice in an atmosphere of silence and community. The 8-day intensive is designed to intensify one’s discipline and practice of Centering Prayer. It is for those with some experience in Centering Prayer. This year we will be using a new set of DVDs by Thomas Keating.

POST-INTENSIVE: Running concurrently with the 8-Day Centering Prayer Retreat, this retreat is for those who have previously made an 8 to 10-day intensive. There will be increased silence and increased periods of Centering Prayer.

Lorita Moffatt, RSM, is a full time staff member at Mercy Center, a spiritual director and supervisor with special interest and experience in the formation of spiritual directors, and directing the Spiritual Exercises.

Carol Fowler has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies and received her formation in Centering Prayer under the direction of Thomas Keating, OCSO. She is currently conducting evenings of prayer and meditation at Vallombrosa Retreat Center and provides workshops on prayer and spirituality in Diocesan parishes.
