FOUR SEASONS HAIKU KAI

BACK TO HAIKU KAI

HAIKU KAI REPORT
February 2, 2019
WINTER MEETING

Attending

Jane Benson, Nancy Brill, Mary Fuchs, Marilyn King, Elaine Mannon, Sarah Paris, Karen Schlumpp, Janet Schroder, and Mark Werlin. David Keim sent in a haiku, and we welcomed first-time attendee Randy Chang.

Meeting

Nancy, who is Japanese on her mother’s side, treated us to a reading of haiku in Japanese and their English translations, with helpful insights on kigo (season words) and kireji (cutting words.) She then led the group in an intriguing exercise in trying our hand at our own translations. Thank you, Nancy!

Sarah encouraged members to submit their haiku for publication, and mentioned that the new web publication proletaria.org is looking for one-line haiku. She herself submitted three that were accepted; see: three-one-line-haiku-by-sarah-paris/
