ART & PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Art & Practice Introduction and Format

The call to the ministry of Spiritual Direction is a journey of faith, contemplative listening, and commitment to study and practice. Art and Practice of Spiritual direction is a two-year contemplative program for the formation of spiritual directors which is focused on interior growth and discernment.

The Art & Practice of Spiritual Direction is a practicum, a framework that emphasizes the importance of personal relationship in the learning process. Interns regularly participate in dyads and triads (contemplative conversations) and small mentor groups. Each year consists of 5 weekend residential intensive sessions. The program begins in September 2020 and ends in May 2022.

After an orientation to the basic theory of Spiritual Direction in Sessions 1 and 2, interns will begin doing hands-on sessions in the practice of spiritual direction. Interns initially do sessions with fellow interns, while observed by staff. Following Session 3 and prior to Session 4, interns must find their own directees and begin providing spiritual direction without charging fees throughout the remainder of the program. Interns will regularly meet their direction supervisor and do check-ins with their Mercy Center staff mentor.
