Supervision Practicum

A one-week program July 7-13, 2019
$1,900 Resident / $1,600 Commuter

A program for experienced spiritual directors who have been in ongoing personal or group supervision, and supervisors who want to enhance their skills.

If you are responding to the call to offer this ministerial support, join us for a week of applied learning in a collegial and contemplative setting. Intensive approach with experienced staff.

Liz Lawhead, M.A. is a spiritual director, supervisor, retreat leader, and prayer group facilitator for those living with cancer. After 30 years of working in high tech as a program manager, she transitioned to full time spiritual direction ministry and completed a Masters in Pastoral Ministries from Santa Clara University. Liz trained in the Spiritual Directors Institute at Mercy Center and is on the Art and Practice of Spiritual Direction team. Liz has a special interest in accompanying those in significant life transitions.

Linda Taylor graduated from Church Divinity School of the Pacific in1999 and served as rector of a local Episcopal church for 13 years. Since retirement from full-time parish ministry in 2014, she has expanded her spiritual direction practice while continuing to serve in churches from Gualala to San Luis Obispo. In 2014, she completed Mercy Center’s program in the Art of Supervision of Spiritual Directors.

Paul Harkness is a spiritual director, supervisor and retreat leader with a practice in Berkeley, California. He is an ordained United Methodist minister. Paul was trained in direction and supervision at Mercy Center in the early 1990s, and serves on on the Sacred Journey program team.

Jim Peterson is an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and a spiritual director trained at the San Francisco Theological Seminary's Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction program. He has provided spiritual direction for over 20 years and supervision of directors for 15 years. Jim helped staff the supervision training program at Mercy Center Burlingame in 2016. He co-leads retreats and does small group facilitation and teaching in three Northern California spiritual formation programs.

$1,900 for residents; $1,600 for commuters

  •  Ask your supervisor to complete a brief online recommendation for you

Accepted participants will receive a link to our secure online payment site where they must make an initial deposit payment of $500.


By July 1, 2019

  •  Make the final balance payment through our secure online payment system

Before You Apply

Please read the following:

You must first pay the nonrefundable $50 application fee to begin the application process.

Follow the Online Application Steps and all directions. You must meet the indicated deadlines to be considered for admission to the program.

Your application must be submitted by May 27, 2019. Only completed applications with recommendations will be reviewed by the admissions team. You may be called for a phone or in-person interview. Not all applicants will be accepted into the program.
